Synopsis

Volcanoes are one of the most impressive natural manifestations of our planet; it is estimated that, annually, there are over 70 eruptions all over the world. For this reason, studying them is important since they may place the population that lives near them at risk. In this book of scientific dissemination, you may find information regarding the Volcano of Colima as well as simple explanations of the earth’s structure, continental drift, tectonic plates, vulcanism, types of magma, types of volcanoes, types of eruptions, volcanic threats, size of eruptions, volcanic monitoring, volcanic risk, and finally, benefits of volcanic activity. Additionally, you may see over 100 photographs taken by the author of the Volcano of Colima’s recent activity which document its activity, as well as the natural beauty of one of the volcanoes considered to be the most active and one of the most majestic in Mexico.

Author Biography

Raúl Arámbula Mendoza, University Of Colima

Raúl Arámbula Mendoza was born in Mexico City on December 18, 1975. He studied at the Faculty of Engineering of the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) completing his studies in Geophysical Engineering. His professional Thesis was on the eruption of the Popocatéptl Volcano of 2000. Afterwards, he entered the post-graduate course in Earth Sciences at the UNAM’s Institute of Geophysics in order to complete to do his master’s degree; his thesis was regarding state of efforts of the Popocatépetl Volcano. After, he entered the PhD in the aforementioned post-graduate course and worked on his thesis on the eruption of the Volcano of Colima in 2004-2005.

He has been a professor at the Faculties of Sciences and the Faculty of Literature and Communication of the University of Colima. Since 2012, he has been a research professor at the University Center for Vulcanological Studies (CUEV) of the University of Colima and since February of 2017, he is the director of said center.  Dr. Raul Arámbula is part of the Scientific Assessment Committee on the Volcano of Colima, as well as Scientific Assessment Committee on the Popocatéptl Volcano, which is associated with National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred). At present, he is part of the National System of Researchers (SNII) from Conahcyt with Level II. He is also an active member of the International Association for Vulcanology and Chemistry of the Earth (IAVCEI), as well as the Latin American Association of Vulcanology (ALVO), of the Latin American Association of Volcanic Seismology (LAVAS), and the Mexican Geophysical Union (UGM).

Since 2014, he has photographed the Volcano of Colima as part of a follow-up from the CUEV, generating an extensive photographic archive. He has also participated in diverse collective and independent photographic exhibitions. This book is the work of nearly ten years capturing the majesty of Mexico’s most active volcano: the Volcano of Colima.
