Synopsis

There are few studies which have been carried out in regards to nicknames, the people with nicknames, those who give out the nicknames, and the reason of why nickname them this or that way. Because of this, this book stands out whose relevance is due to expressive richness of the 250 monikers collected, and to the diverse angles from which its analytic approximation was carried out.

In this Nickname Guide, numerous and colorful monikers animate the onomastic landscape of the Municipality of Cuauhtémoc, Colima, and procure a verbally “nicknamish” image of the communities of Quesería, Cuauhtémoc, Alcaraces, Buenavista, and El Trapiche. The nicknames are classified and analyzed according to their geographic origin, accompanied by an informative file card which breaks down different perspectives such as the phonetic transcription, the typology, and an explanation provided by the informant of the origin of the nickname, among other aspects.

This book is the product of the research project called Los apodos de del occidente de México (The Nicknames of Western Mexico), in which participate the Academic Bodies 49, “Rescate del patrimonio cultural y literario” and 67, “Sociedad, cultura y significación”; of the University of Colima.

Author Biographies

Gloria Ignacia Vergara Mendoza, University Of Colima

Gloria Ignacia Vergara Mendoza has a PhD in Modern Literature from Universidad Iberoamericana and is a full-time research professor at the Faculty of Literature and Communication of the University of Colima. She is a member of Academic Body 49, “Rescate del Patrimonio Cultural y Literario” and of the National System of Researchers; a corresponding academician in Colima of the Mexican Academy of Language and a member of the Seminary of Mexican Culture, Colima Correspondent’s office. Her lines of reesearch are on: Hermeneutics and reception, Mexican literature and Oral tradition.

Gilberto Maximiano Ceballos Esqueda, University of Colima

Gilberto Maximiano Ceballos Esqueda has a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Universidad de las Américas Puebla and is a full-time research professor at the Faculty of Literature and Communication of the University of Colima. He is an associated member of Academic Body 67, “Sociedad, Cultura y Significación.” His line of research is on: Cultural Meanings.

José Manuel González Freire, University of Colima

José Manuel González Freire holds a PhD in Philology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and is a full-time research professor at the Faculty of Literature and Communication and a leader of Academic Body 49, “Rescate del Patrimonio Cultural y Literario”, of the University of Colima. He is a member of the National System of Researchers and has a Prodep-SEP: Desirable Profile. He is also a member of the Society of Colima for Historical Studies and of the Network of Spanish Scientists in Mexico (RECEMX). His fields of research are: History, Biographies and Philology.

Lucila Gutiérrez Santana, University of Colima

Lucila Gutiérrez Santana has a PhD in Linguistics from Universidad de Concepción, in Chile and is a full-time research professor at the Faculty of Literature and Communication and director of the journal Interpretextos, of the University of Colima. She is a member of Academic Body 67, “Sociedad, Cultura y Significación. Her lines of reesearch are on: Onomastics, Hypocoristics and Phonology.
