Synopsis

This chapter evaluates the export competitiveness of manufacturing in the State of Mexico by estimating revealed comparative advantage at the subsector level. Using INEGI state export statistics for 2007–2023, it computes Balassa-type revealed comparative advantage indices for total manufacturing and 21 subsectors, benchmarking the state’s export structure against the national manufacturing export mix. The evidence shows that manufacturing as a whole retains a modest advantage (IVCE ≈ 1.1 in 2023) but with a gradual decline since 2007. Export concentration is high in transport equipment, chemicals, and food. Only nine exporting subsectors maintain IVCE>1, indicating erosion of competitiveness and the need for differentiated industrial policies and upgrading.
