Irreverent Tracks, by Iván Medina Castro, is a collection of “tracks” which traverse various paths of music and of life itself. They are texts that have sound, you can hear them among their notes, among their voices. Tales which invite you to dance, close to someone, him/her, a sensual dance, like flowers that are swayed by the wind, like fire in its sizzle. They are dances of short paces, there are no lethargic guitar solos nor unfounded silences. Brevity, almost triviality, prevails. One advances a line, barely drags one foot and the music is interrupted, sometimes with surprise, other times for no apparent reason. As it goes on, one can’t help but think of other voices such as Machado’s, who in the voice of Serrat sings “I love subtle, weightless and gentle worlds, like bubbles of soap.” Thus, Iván’s short stories rise up in the face of our paper eyes gaze, they subtly float. They reflect, in their imperfect circumference, diverse geographies, diverse eras, faces. In these tales, passion reigns, which, just like soap bubbles, is sudden, it comes and goes without previous warning. It explodes and is. It ends with no explanation, leaving us with a strange taste on our lips, a subtle taste, which sometimes, in the best of cases, may evoke a melody, a smile, a triumph, or the color of someone’s eyes.
